Legend speaks of a shepherd named "Bucur" after which the city of Bucharest (ro. "Bucuresti") was named. According to this legend, as Bucur was playing his flute, the joy of his song bettered the wine produced by neighbouring vineyards, bringing the shepherd closer to local merchants who eventually named the town "Bucuresti" in his honor. For this reason, Bucharest is also known as "the city of joy"
